Japan eSIM on Android: Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi & OPPO Compatibility (2026)

Updated: 2026-10-08 15:41:06

Most recent Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Xiaomi and OPPO phones can use a Japan eSIM, as long as three conditions are met: the phone shows an EID when you dial *#06#, it is carrier-unlocked, and it runs a global (not mainland China) firmware version. If all three check out, installing a Japan eSIM takes about a minute from the phone's SIM or mobile network settings.

Quick answer: Galaxy S20 and later, Pixel 3 and later, Xiaomi 12T Pro and later flagships, and OPPO Find X3 and later generally support eSIM. Budget Redmi/POCO models and China-ROM devices usually do not.

How do I check if my Android phone supports a Japan eSIM?

Run these three checks before you buy. Any Android phone that passes all three can install a Japan eSIM.

  1. EID check: Open the phone dialer and enter *#06#. A 32-digit EID on screen means the phone has eSIM hardware.
  2. Carrier lock check: A phone bought on contract may be locked to its original carrier. A locked phone cannot activate another provider's Japan eSIM until the carrier unlocks it.
  3. Firmware region check: The same model can ship with different firmware by market. Xiaomi and OPPO phones sold in mainland China typically have eSIM disabled at the system level, and this cannot be fixed with a setting.

Menu labels vary slightly by OS version. If you cannot find the option, type "eSIM" into the search bar at the top of Settings.

Why can't I find the eSIM option on my Xiaomi or OPPO?

There are usually two causes. First, the phone may be a China-market unit: Xiaomi and OPPO devices on mainland China firmware generally have eSIM switched off. Second, on Xiaomi phones the eSIM shares resources with the second physical SIM slot. Xiaomi's own support page states that eSIM and SIM 2 cannot be used at the same time, so remove or disable SIM 2 first, then turn on "Use eSIM."

If your phone fails these checks, a physical SIM card or pocket WiFi is the better choice for your Japan trip.

What should I set after installing a Japan eSIM on Android?

  • Mobile data: In the SIM settings, assign mobile data to the Japan eSIM. Your home SIM can stay on for calls and texts.
  • Data roaming: CDJapan Rental's eSIM connects directly to docomo's network in Japan, so data roaming does not need to be turned on. Roaming-based eSIMs from other providers do require it.
  • Timing: Install before you fly, then turn on the eSIM's mobile data after you land. CDJapan Rental's eSIM validity starts from first use, not from installation.
  • Hotspot: Tethering works by default on CDJapan Rental's eSIM. Manual APN settings are only a fallback if the hotspot fails.

Note that CDJapan Rental's eSIM is data-only: it does not include a phone number, voice calls or SMS. It is also tied to the phone it is installed on and cannot be moved to another device, though it can be reinstalled on the same phone if deleted.

FAQ

It works if dialing *#06# shows an EID, the phone is carrier-unlocked, and it runs global firmware. Galaxy S20+, Pixel 3+, Xiaomi 12T Pro+ and OPPO Find X3+ generally qualify.

Usually not. Xiaomi phones on China ROM typically have eSIM disabled at the system level. Global, EEA and India ROM versions of eSIM-capable models do support it.

Go to Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM → Scan QR code, then assign mobile data to the new eSIM.

It depends on the eSIM. CDJapan Rental's eSIM runs on docomo's local network and does not need data roaming. Roaming-based eSIMs do.

Yes. Use the manual activation code instead of the QR code. CDJapan Rental shows both on My Page after purchase, so you can copy and paste the code on the same phone.
