Hotels, trains, IC card apps, taxi apps and most restaurant booking platforms accept an overseas number, and everything else runs on data. A data-only Japan eSIM covers the entire trip. Only two things genuinely need a phone line: receiving SMS codes tied to your home number, and dialing a Japanese landline directly. Both have straightforward workarounds.

What actually requires a Japanese phone number?

Does a Japan eSIM come with a phone number?

Most travel eSIMs sold for Japan are data-only. They give you mobile internet, not a Japanese number you can be called on. The CDJapan Rental Japan eSIM is a data plan on the local docomo network; it does not include voice calls or SMS. eSIMs activated on or after July 1, 2026 run on docomo 5G where 5G coverage exists, and on 4G LTE elsewhere.

In practice this matters less than travelers expect. Once you have data, LINE, WhatsApp and Messenger calls all work normally, which covers contacting people you are traveling with, your hotel, or a tour operator. Japanese voice lines generally require residency documents such as a residence card, so a tourist visa cannot get one anyway.

How do you keep receiving SMS verification codes?

This is the one thing worth setting up before departure. Bank and account verification codes are sent to your existing number, not to a Japanese one, so the fix is to run both lines at once:

• Your home SIM: leave it switched on so calls and SMS still arrive, but turn off mobile data and data roaming to avoid roaming charges.
• Your Japan eSIM: set it as the line for mobile data, so all internet traffic goes through the local network.

Can you book restaurants without a Japanese number?

Popular restaurants often sell out within a minute of opening their booking window. At that moment, having a fast, stable connection matters far more than having a Japanese number.

What about emergencies and lost IC cards?

A data-only Japan eSIM cannot dial 110 (police) or 119 (fire and ambulance). Keep your home SIM in the phone as a fallback; payphones in Japan place emergency calls free of charge and are still common around stations and convenience stores. As for IC cards, an unregistered physical Suica or PASMO generally cannot be suspended or replaced if you lose it, which has nothing to do with phone numbers.
