Why is my eSIM Japan not working?

A Japan eSIM is one of the most convenient ways to stay connected while travelling — no physical SIM swap needed, just activate and go. Yet nearly every "eSIM Japan not working" complaint traces back to a small set of fixable causes: a missed setting, a device restriction, or a step skipped during setup.

The 8 checks below are ordered from most to least common. Go through them one by one and you should identify the problem quickly.

Does your phone support eSIM?

Not every smartphone has an eSIM chip. Even within the same model line, certain regional variants — particularly Chinese-market and some Hong Kong / Macau models — do not support eSIM at all.

How to check on iPhone

Go to Settings → Mobile Service. If you see an Add eSIM option, your device supports eSIM.

How to check on Android

Go to Settings → Network & Internet (or Connections) → SIM cards. If you see an Add eSIM option, your device is compatible.

Is your phone SIM-locked (carrier-locked)?

A SIM lock (Carrier Lock / Network Lock) is a restriction applied by your home carrier that prevents your device from using SIMs or eSIMs from other providers. Even if your Japan eSIM installs correctly, a locked phone will not be able to connect to the Japanese network.

!

How to check on iPhone

Go to Settings → General → About and scroll down to Carrier Lock. If it reads No SIM restrictions, your phone is unlocked.

!

How to check on Android

The path varies by brand, but usually: Settings → About Phone → SIM card status. Alternatively, contact your home carrier directly to confirm unlock status.

📌 Fix: Contact your home carrier to request an unlock. This is usually free once your contract has ended or the device is fully paid off. Many carriers accept online requests with a 1–3 business day turnaround.

Have you switched to the eSIM?

Installing an eSIM is not the same as activating it. On a dual-SIM device your physical SIM and eSIM coexist — if the phone is still using your home SIM as the primary data line, the Japan eSIM will sit idle.

How to switch on iPhone

iPhone

📍 Steps

  1. Open Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular)
  2. Tap the name of your installed eSIM plan
  3. Toggle Turn On This Line to On
  4. Under Mobile Data, select this eSIM plan

📍 Steps

  1. Go to Settings → Connections → SIM card manager
  2. Find your installed eSIM and enable it
  3. Set Mobile data to the eSIM
  4. Confirm Preferred network type is set to 5G / LTE / Auto

Have you checked the data roaming setting?

This is the most commonly overlooked setting — and the one that fixes the most "eSIM Japan not working" cases.

If you purchased a local Japan eSIM, data roaming must be turned OFF. This type of eSIM registers as a domestic SIM; enabling roaming can actually prevent it from connecting.

If you purchased a roaming-type eSIM, data roaming must be turned ON for the connection to work.

!

iPhone: enable or disable data roaming for your eSIM

Settings → Mobile Service → select your eSIM plan → toggle Data Roaming on or off as required.

⚠️ Also make sure data roaming on your physical SIM is OFF to avoid unexpected international charges on your home bill.

Android: double-check Mobile Data + Data Roaming

Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → select your eSIM → toggle Mobile data and Data roaming as required.

⚠️ Ensure the other SIM card's roaming is also turned off.

Is the APN configured correctly?

The APN (Access Point Name) tells your phone how to connect to the mobile data network. Some Android devices do not automatically apply the correct APN after installing an eSIM, requiring manual entry. iPhones usually handle this automatically via a carrier profile, so this is less commonly an issue on iOS.

How to set APN manually on Android

Android

📍 Steps

  1. Go to Settings → Mobile networks → select your eSIM
  2. Tap Access Point Names (APN)
  3. Add a new entry and input the APN details from your provider
  4. Save and restart your phone

📌 The correct APN values can be found in the setup guide or welcome email sent at time of purchase.

Try toggling Airplane Mode

When you first land in Japan, your phone may not latch onto the correct cell tower right away, or cached network settings can prevent a clean connection. The quickest fix is a forced network reset using Airplane Mode.

Enable Airplane Mode
Wait 15–30 seconds
Disable Airplane Mode
Wait ~30 seconds for the phone to find a network

If that doesn't work, a full device restart will completely reset all network state.

Signal coverage & band compatibility

Japan's major carriers — NTT Docomo, SoftBank, and KDDI/au — operate on specific frequency bands. If your handset doesn't support those bands, you may get no signal at all or a very weak connection even with a correctly configured eSIM Japan plan.

?

Common 4G/5G bands used in Japan

4G LTE 5G

4G: Band 1 (2100 MHz), Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 19/26 (800 MHz)

5G: n77, n78, n79

Check your phone's official spec page to confirm band support. International variants typically cover all of the above.

Select network operator manually

Go to Settings → Mobile Service / Mobile networks → Network selection, turn off Automatic, then manually search for and select NTT DOCOMO, SoftBank, or au.

Once connected, you can switch back to Automatic.

Is your plan active? Has it expired?

Many Japan eSIM plans use a first-use activation or scheduled start date model — the data allowance only begins counting down once you first connect. However, some plans start counting immediately from the moment of purchase, meaning the plan may already be expired by the time you arrive.

Confirm activation method

Refer to the setup guide or product page from your purchase to confirm which activation model your plan uses.

Check remaining data

Some plans include a data-usage portal or app. Check whether your data allowance has been fully used. Once depleted, speeds may drop to 128 kbps or the connection may stop entirely, depending on the plan.

FAQ — Still no connection? Check here

eSIM installed, but phone shows "No Service" — what now?+
This is usually caused by the eSIM not being activated, a carrier lock, or incompatible frequency bands. Confirm your phone is unlocked, then try selecting a network operator manually (see Check 07).
I can see the eSIM is installed, but there's no mobile data?+
The eSIM is connected, but mobile data is likely still routed through your physical SIM, or the APN is misconfigured. Revisit Checks 03, 04, and 05.
I have two SIMs (physical + eSIM) — which one should handle mobile data?+
While travelling in Japan, set mobile data to your Japan eSIM and turn off data roaming on your physical SIM to avoid unexpected international roaming charges on your home plan.
Can I use a Japan eSIM on an iPad or other device?+
It depends on the plan and device compatibility. Most travel eSIMs are single-device only and require an eSIM-capable model (certain iPad models qualify). Confirm compatibility before purchasing.
My eSIM disappeared after restarting — what happened?+
eSIM data is stored on the device chip and should not disappear after a restart. If you can't see it, go to Settings → Mobile Service to check whether it has been disabled. Note that most providers' QR codes are single-use — do not scan the same code twice.
Can I buy a Japan eSIM after I've already arrived?+
Yes, but you'll need a Wi-Fi connection to download and install it. We recommend purchasing and installing your eSIM before departure so you can connect the moment you land in Japan.
